WISE COUNTY, TEXAS

I am looking for my great great grandfather, James Berry Barton. All I know about James Berry was that he must have come from close to the border of TN because my aunt remembered her mother talking about when they crossed the Mississippi which was not far from their home. They came to the Indian territory. I am thinking she meant Indian territory in Texas, but it could have been in Oklahoma. I believe that it was in the north eastern part of Texas and the southeastern part of Oklahoma. He married Priscilla Caroline Hutton and they had two children:

  1. Mary Elizabeth (b. 11-5-1870; Indian Territory, across Red River from Gainsville, TX)  Mary Elizabeth, my great grandmother, married 1-19-1898 John Luther Manning in Alvord, Wise County, TX.  Mary Elizabeth died in Foard County, TX.
  2. Fannie married a man with the last name of Farris.

James and Priscilla were missionaries to the Indians in Indian Territory in OK and TX. He had a brother, John, and two sisters, Ann and Rebecca (Becca), that came to the Indian Territory with him and at least one brother that stayed in TN.  They lived in and around Wise County, TX.

Mary Elizabeth and Fannie were orphaned at a very young age and raised by their 2 aunts and uncle.
